Underwood Stakes
The Underwood Stakes was originally named the Williamstown Stakes and was first run at Williamstown Racecourse over one mile on August 23, 1924.
The inaugural running was won by Mr Ben Chaffey’s champion WFA star, Whittier.
Whittier would repeat the dose the following year giving him back-to-back wins in the race.
In 1926, the Club renamed the Williamstown Stakes, the Underwood Stakes, in honour of their late Chairman, Mr Henry A Underwood who died the previous year.
In March 1940, Williamstown racecourse was taken over by the military for use as an army camp for the duration of the war. During this time all Williamstown meetings were held at Flemington and Moonee Valley. Unlike Caulfield, which was also used as a military camp and reopened in 1946, Williamstown racecourse’s reopening was delayed and its race meetings continued to be run at Flemington, Moonee Valley and later, Caulfield.
In 1948 the VATC took-over the Underwood Stakes making it the main event of their new program to be run annually at Caulfield on the Melbourne show-day holiday in late September.
The delays in reopening Williamstown racecourse dragged on for years and in 1949 it was decided that reopening the facility was no longer a viable option. The racecourse was sold-off to the Federal Government and converted to a migrant accommodation complex.
The Underwood Stakes continued to be run on the Melbourne Show-Day holiday until 1994 when it was then transferred to a Saturday meeting. The distance was also shortened at this time from 2000m to 1800m.
In 2021 the Underwood Stakes was permanently transferred to Sandown Racecourse.
Many great horses have won the Underwood Stakes over the years.
Horses like, Whittier, Phar Lap, Hall Mark, Ajax, Royal Gem, Lord, Aquanita, Tobin Bronze, Bonecrusher, Rubiton, Octagonal, Northerly and So You Think, to name a few.
The most successful trainer of winners of the Underwood Stakes is shared by Jack Holt and Ken Hilton who both trained the winner on seven occasions.

1940/41 – Underwood Stakes run at Moonee Valley over 1 mile
1940 – In March, Williamstown racecourse was taken over by the military for use as an army camp for the duration of the war.
During this time all Williamstown meetings were held at Flemington and Moonee Valley. Unlike Caulfield, which was also used as a military camp and reopened in 1946, Williamstown racecourse’s reopening was delayed and its race meetings continued to be run at Flemington, Moonee Valley and later, Caulfield.
Sadly, Williamstown racecourse never reopened and 1938 turned out to be the last year that the Underwood Stakes was held there.
