Randwick Guineas

        Randwick Guineas

Although the Randwick Guineas is a relatively new event on the Australian racing calendar, its predecessor, the Canterbury Guineas had a long history dating back to its first running in 1935.

The Canterbury Guineas was discontinued in 2005 due to changes by the ATC & STC that saw the introduction in 2006 of a new three year old Group one event, the Randwick Guineas.

Although the 1600m Randwick Guineas is 300m shorter than the Canterbury Guineas, it is still considered the first leg of the 3YO “Triple Crown”, with the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) being the second leg and the Australian Derby (2400m) completing the three race series.

The 2013 Randwick Guineas winner, It’s A Dundeel went on to win the Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby, thus becoming the first winner of the new “Triple Crown”

      Canterbury Guineas


The Canterbury Guineas was first run in the spring of 1935 and was won in emphatic fashion by Mr. Hunter White’s chestnut colt, Hadrian.

The distance of that first Canterbury Guineas was 9 furlongs and 80 yards and it stayed that way until 1957 when it was increased to 1 mile 1 ½ furlongs.

There were a few minor distance changes from 1973 onwards, mostly alternating between 1850m & 1900m.

The introduction of the Canterbury Guineas meant that Sydney now had three middle distance races for three year olds, all run during the spring program.

As the first leg of the “Triple Crown” the Canterbury Guineas joined the Rosehill Guineas (2^nd leg) and the AJC Derby (3^rd leg) to form the three race series.

Since the Triple Crown’s inception in 1935, only four horses have been successful in completing the middle distance championship:

1943 – Moorland

1959 – Martello Towers

1973 – Imagele

1996 – Octagonal

The rescheduling of the event in 1978 from the spring to the autumn meant that there was no running of the Canterbury Guineas that year.

When racing “under lights” was introduced to Canterbury racecourse in 2000, the Canterbury Guineas meeting became part of the club’s night racing program.

The curtain came down on the Canterbury Guineas in 2005 when Jymcarew won the final running of the three year old classic.

The race was discontinued due to changes by the ATC & STC that saw the introduction of the Randwick Guineas, a 1600m event that now became the first leg of the Sydney “Triple  Crown”.

The most successful trainer of winners of the Canterbury Guineas is the irrepressible T. J. Smith with an incredible tally of eleven winners:
