Winx Stakes
(Warwick
Stakes)
Named after the champion race-mare, Winx, the WFA Winx
Stakes, although a recent addition to the Group 1 racing calendar, actually has
a long and prestigious history.
Originally known as the Warwick Stakes, the race was traditionally run at Warwick Farm racecourse and has a history that goes back to the early 1920s.
First run in September 1923, over 6 furlongs, the inaugural running was WFA with penalties and allowances and was won by the Eric Connolly owned and trained, Sunburst.Although there has been a few minor distance changes over the years, the race has been mostly contested over 7f/1400m.
Looking back through the ranks of its winners, the Warwick/Winx Stakes is represented by many of the greatest gallopers of Australian racing.Greats like Limerick, Amounis, Chatham, Flight, Bernborough, San Domenico, Tulloch, Sky High, Kingston Town, Super Impose and Sunline, to name a few. And of course, the great mare herself, Winx.
Along with Limerick and Kingston Town, Winx has the shared honour of having won this race on three consecutive occasions, twice as the Warwick Stakes (2016/17) and once as the race named in her honour, the Winx Stakes (2018).
The most successful trainer of winners of the Warwick
Stakes is Tommy Smith who prepared the winner on ten occasions;

Unlike other racecourses that were occupied by the military during the war years, Warwick Farm did not reopen when the war ended. The damage done to the complex during its occupation was so extensive that delays to its reopening dragged on for years.
Also, inadequacies of Totalisators, catering, grandstands and sewerage systems meant that building and upgrade work delayed the reopening even further. Warwick Farm meetings continued to be held at Randwick until the course finally reopened to the racing public in 1952.
