The race we know today as the Doomben 10,000 was first run at the inaugural meeting of the new Doomben racecourse on Saturday May 20 1933.
Like Flemington, the new Doomben track had a straight six furlong course, so it’s no surprise that the B. A. T. C. named their premier 6f sprint race, the Doomben Newmarket.

The first Doomben Newmarket was won by Wollun, who was owned by well-known northern districts horse-owner, Mr. Henry Copel.
Wollen had to survive a protest from the second placed, Closing Time.

From the end of 1941 until mid 1944, Doomben racecourse was used by the military as an army base for Australian and American troops. During these years, all Doomben races were transferred to the Albion Park sand track with four Doomben Newmarkets being decided there, these four Newmarkets were contested over seven furlongs.

When the military vacated Doomben in mid 1944 they left the track in such a terrible state that it would be another two years before the B.A.T.C. could put it back into use as a racecourse.
During this time, the race-club also lost its straight-six Newmarket course when part of the track had to be resumed due to construction of the nearby Eagle Farm airport.

On June 1 1946, Doomben Racecourse was back in business and was celebrating it’s reopening with a new 7f sprint race that boasted the biggest purse of any sprint race in Australasia – £10,000.
The new race was called the Ahern Memorial Handicap, named in honour of the BATC's late chairman T. M. Ahern. The following year it was re-named the Doomben Ten Thousand.
How lucky they were to have the mighty Bernborough as their star attraction on such a momentous day, and Bernborough didn’t let them down, winning the Ahern Memorial Handicap under 10.5 with ridiculous ease.

From 1946 until 1963, the Doomben 10,000 was run over a distance of 7 furlongs less 93 yards.
The distance was changed to an even 7 furlongs for the 1964 and 65 events before being changed again in 1966 to 7 furlongs less 68 yards.
The race remained at 7 furlongs less 68 yards until 1973 when Australian racing changed to the metric measurement system, this saw the Doomben 10,000 change to the now familiar 1350 metres.
Four horses have won the Doomben 10,000 on more than one occasion:
1969/70 Black Onyx – 1990/91 Prince Trialia – 2001/02 Falvelon
2008/09 Apache Cat

T. J. Smith remains the most successful trainer in the race’s history, having trained the winner on six occasions:
1955 Apple Bay  – 1964 The Tempest – 1969/70 Black Onyx
1982 Ideal Planet  – 1985 Lord Ballina .

Riding honours go to George Moore with five wins:
1940 Expressman – 1953 True Leader – 1957 Teranyan – 1969 Black Onyx
1971 Baguette 

Although Bernborough won his race under 10.5 (66kg) his was not the highest weight carried to victory in a Doomben 10,000, this honour stands with another Queenslander, Auction, who won in 1942 carrying the massive burden of 10.12 (69kg).

Auction excelled on sand and was virtually unbeatable at Albion Park, so when the Doomben races were transferred to that course during the war years, Auction was handicapped on his record and ability on sand. Queensland punters obviously knew how good Auction was at ‘the creek’ and despite his 10.12 (69kg) sent him out a 6/4 favourite.

Auction justified the punters faith and the handicapper’s impost by leading most of the way for an easy win.
