       Robert Sangster Stakes 

                           (Swettenham Stud Stakes)

The Robert Sangster Stakes was known in the early years as the Swettenham Stud Stakes and was first run at Morphettville over 1200m in February 1983.

It was won that first year by the Colin Little trained Ranee’s Palace who was ridden by Rod Dawkins.

Originally a set weights and penalties race for fillies and mares, the race changed to a WFA event in 1990.

In 2005 the race was awarded Group 1 status and renamed the Robert Sangster Stakes in honour of the late Robert Sangster who had passed-away the previous year. The name change was in keeping with the original name as Robert Sangster owned the famous Swettenham Stud and raced many great gallopers under the Swettenham Stud Syndicate banner. 

The most successful trainer of winners of the Robert Sangster Stakes is Mick Price who has trained the winner on four occasions:

Tattersall's Tiara

 

                              Tattersall’s Tiara 

                         (Winter Stakes)

Originally a set weights plus penalties handicap, the Winter Stakes (1500m) was first run during the Queensland winter carnival of 1989 at Eagle Farm racecourse. The inaugural running was won by the Gary Newham trained and Stephen Schofield ridden three-year-old filly, La Posette.

The race distance remained at 1500m until 2007, when it was shortened to 1400m. 2007 also saw the handicap conditions changed to WFA and the Winter Stakes upgraded to Group 1 status.

 

In 2011 the race name was changed from the Winter Stakes to the Tattersall’s Tiara.

Run in late June, the Tattersall’s Tiara is the final Group 1 event of the Queensland Winter carnival and is also the final Group 1 race of the Australian racing year.

Three horses have completed the Stradbroke Hcp/Tatt’s Tiara double – Dane Ripper in 1997 Srikandi in 2015 and Tofane in 2021.

Only one horse has won the Tatt’s Tiara/Winter Cup on more than one occasion, Bonanova achieved this double when she scored successive wins in 1999 & 2000.

Gerald Ryan is the most successful trainer of winners of the Winter Stakes having trained the winner on three occasions:
