Tancred Stakes
The H. E. Tancred Stakes (originally The Tancred Cup) was first run in 1963 over 1 ½ miles at Rosehill racecourse and was won by Mr W. Treweekes, Maidenhead.
A Group 1 WFA event, the Tancred Stakes is part of the STC’s rich autumn racing carnival and is contested on the same card as the Golden Slipper.
The race was named in
honour of Mr H. E. Tancred, a former chairman (1953-1959) and one of the
original board members of the Sydney Turf Club.
In 1977 the race was
renamed the H. E. Tancred Stakes.
Over the years, sponsorship
deals have seen the name changed to reflect such companies as, Breville, Bowater
Scott, Mercedes and BMW.
In 1988 the STC decided to
market the Tancred Stakes as an international event, the prizemoney was
increased to $1m and the race was rebranded The Tancred International Stakes.
The first Tancred
International Stakes attracted good line-up of gallopers from France, Ireland,
Britain & the USA, but they were no match for the brilliant local three
year old sensation, Beau Zam.
The following year another four internationals lined up, but the race went to the classy Kiwi galloper, Our
Poetic Prince.
In 1990 a sponsorship deal
with BMW saw the race become The BMW International and two overseas gallopers lined
up in the field of eleven. The race was won by the Tasmanian galloper Sydeston.
The following year the
race was rebranded The BMW with the ‘ínternational’ aspect no longer
being promoted.
From 1996 to 2001 the race became known as the Mercedes Classic before changing back in 2002 to the BMW. In 2018 the name changed again, this time to the Tancred Stakes.
