Empire Rose Stakes
The Empire Rose Stakes is a Group 1 1600m WFA race for fillies and mares, three years and upward, that is held each year at Flemington as part of the VRC spring carnival.
Named after the champion New Zealand mare and 1988 Melbourne Cup winner, Empire Rose, the race has had a few name changes over the years.
First run on Melbourne Cup day 1988, under the sponsorship of Honda, the race was known as the Honda Legend.
Further sponsorship deals saw the race name change in 1993 to the Hong Kong Bank Stakes, then in 1994 to the Hardy Brothers Classic, 2003 the Nestle Peters Classic and in 2005 to the Myer Classic.
In 1994 the race was moved from Melbourne Cup day to VRC Derby day and in 2018 it was renamed the Empire Rose Stakes.
