The first running of the Goodwood Handicap took place at Morphettville racecourse on May 7th 1881
The race was won by Mr. Daniel O’Dea’s, D.O.D.

As well as writing himself into South Australia’s racing history as the first Goodwood winner, D.O.D. also went into the Australian racing record books as the longest priced winner of any race in Australian history.
When it was revealed after the running of the Goodwood Handicap that only one person on course held a ticket on the winner, that person, Mr. J. Smith, scooped the entire win pool and received a dividend payment of £836 for his £1 investment.

From 1881 to 1885 The Goodwood Handicap was run over a distance of one mile.
In 1885 a repeal of the Totalisator Act saw all forms of gambling in South Australia banned, this resulted in the closing-down of the state’s racing industry.
In 1889 the ban was lifted and race clubs were issued with permits to, once again, operate the totalisator betting system.

When racing resumed, the SAJC made a distance change to the Goodwood Handicap. No longer a mile event, the Goodwood Handicap was now a six furlong sprint and the club set about promoting its revamped race as South Australia’s premier sprinting event.
The Goodwood Handicap remained at six furlongs until Australia’s conversion to the metric system when the distance changed to 1200m. The only other change in distance occurred in 1980 as a one-off, when the distance was increased to 1450m.

In 1933, the Betting Control Board allowed licensed bookmakers to operate on-course as well as at off-course betting shops throughout South Australia. Until then, all wagering had been by way of the on-course totalisator.
A wartime ban on racing in South Australia by the state government saw racing cease for 20 months between 1942 & 43.

The highest weight carried to victory in a Goodwood Handicap was 10.0 by the champion South Australian sprinter, Aurie’s Star, who, despite his burden, thrashed his opposition by five lengths, breaking the race record in the process.

Only two gallopers have won the Goodwood on more than one occasion, Mostyn in 1894/95 and Musket Belle in 1911/12.

The most successful trainer of the Goodwood Handicap is Walter Hickenbotham with five winners: 
Finland 1901 – Footbolt 1902 – Step Out 1906 – True Scot 1909
Lord Derby 1910

South Australian jockey John Letts heads the riding honours list, also with five winners: Mikadis 1961 – Tango Miss 1972 – Wise Virgin 1973
Romantic Dream 1977 – Leica Planet 1984.

Many interstate gallopers have made the trip to Adelaide to take on the South Australian sprinters, and although many have been successful, the South Australians have the better of their inter-state visitors on the winners’ board.
Great South Aussies like Aurie’s Star, Unishak, Royal Gem, Cellarman, Copper Year, Matrice and Samist, to name a few, have held their own against the best from the eastern states, and kept the Goodwood trophy at home.

In 2007 the Goodwood Handicap was changed from a handicap to a set-weights plus penalties event and renamed, simply ‘The Goodwood’

December 1893: Another betting ban is introduced by the state government, however, public pressure sees the law amended to allow the operation of ‘Totalizator only’ betting at racetracks. The new law meant that bookmaking was now illegal in the state of South Australia
