             Hobart Cup



The first running of the Hobart Cup took place on Thursday, February 11th 1875.
Named ‘The Hobart Town Cup’ the race was run over two miles and was the main race of the program on the opening day of Elwick racecourse.
The Cup was won by Mr Phillip Dowling’s bay mare, Ella.
Throughout its long history, the Hobart Cup has traditionally been run in late January or early February.

In 1878 the name was changed to ‘The Tasmanian Cup’ and the distance shortened to 1 ¾ miles. This name change only lasted until the following year where the name was reinstated to the former Hobart Town Cup, however, the shorter distance was kept until 1886 when it was then shortened further to 1 ½ miles. In 1882 the name was also shortened to The Hobart Cup.

The most successful trainer of winners of the Hobart Cup is shared by 
Bill Clare and Dick Abbott who both trained the winner on six occasions.

As is the case with the trainers, two jockeys also share the riding honours for the Hobart Cup with Edward Power and Eddie Cox both riding the winner on four occasions.

Only one horse has completed the Hobart Cup/Melbourne Cup double and that happened in 1972 when the Tasmanian bred, and owned Piping Lane upset the mainland stars with a comfortable win at 40/1
