A. J. Moir Stakes
The A. J. Moir Stakes was named after the former Chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club, Mr Alan John Moir.
Like the Freeway/Manikato Stakes, the A J Moir Stakes is a Group 1 sprint that takes place every spring at Moonee Valley racecourse.
The Moir Stakes (1000m) was first run in 1976 and was won by Mr A. Stevens brilliant sprinter, Scamanda. The Moir had a delayed start to its history as it was due to have its inaugural running on Cox Plate day 1975, but wet weather on the day caused the meeting to be abandoned after the Cox Plate, with three races still undecided, including the Moir Stakes.
In 2007 the distance was extended to 1200m but was reduced back to its original 1000m in 2015.
The race name changed a few times as sponsors came and went, some of those sponsors included, British Airways, VIC Health and Schweppes. The race reverted back to its original A. J. Moir Stakes in 2012.

The most successful trainer has been Queenslander Bruce McLachlan who saddled-up four winners:

Angus Armanasco also saddled-up four winners though one of them (The Judge 1979) was a dead-heat win.
