AJC Spring Champion Stakes

      AJC Spring Champion Stakes


The race we know today as the Spring Champion Stakes was first run in the autumn of 1971 and was originally called the Australasian Champion Stakes.
That first Champion Stakes was run at Randwick racecourse over ten furlongs and was won by the Cyril Beechey owned and trained, Gay Icarus.

A major change occurred in 1978 when the race was shifted from the autumn to the spring, this meant that two Champion Stakes were run in that same year, one in the autumn and the other in the spring.
Thus the newly rescheduled race became the Spring Champion Stakes.

The Spring Champion Stakes is used as an early guide to a horse’s ability to handle a middle distance, particularly with a view to the 3 year old classic, the VRC Derby which is run later in the spring.
Only four horses have won the Spring Champion Stakes/VRC Derby double:
1989 Stylish Century
1995 Nothin’ Leica Dane
2009 Monaco Consul
2017 Ace High

The most successful trainer of winners of the Spring Champion Stakes is the master himself, T J Smith who won the race on five occasions:
1976 Cheyne Walk – 1978 Just A Steel – 1979 Kingston Town
1984 Luck’s A Lottery – 1985 Easter 

Riding honours go to Ron Quinton who piloted the winner on four occasions:
1973 Gold Brick – 1982 Veloso – 1983 Sir Dapper – 1985 Easter.
