Storm Queen Stakes
(Vinery Stud Stakes)
The Storm Queen Stakes is named in honour of the champion filly of the mid 1960s, Storm Queen.
Bred in South Australia by Bart Cummings, Storm Queen stamped herself as the best two-year-old in the country as she reeled-off eight consecutive wins from her nine starts that season. Her wins included the SAJC Bloodstock Breeders Stakes, VATC Merson Cooper Stakes, VRC Sires Produce Stakes, STC Golden Slipper & AJC Champagne Stakes. Her three year old season was also her final season on the track and although she was not as invincible as a three-year-old, she still managed to add the MVRC Moonee Valley Stakes, VRC Edward Manifold Stakes, VATC Caulfield Guineas, VRC George Adams H’cap and the VRC Lightning Stakes to her outstanding career record.
The Storm Queen Stakes is a set-weight event for three year old fillies and was first run on Wednesday, April 4 1979 at Canterbury racecourse. The winner was Impede, owned by the Kelly family and trained by Tommy Smith.
The following year the Storm Queen Stakes was run at Rosehill on Golden Slipper/Tancred Stakes day and stayed as part of that days program until 2015 when the Golden Slipper was rescheduled that year to be run the following Saturday. The Storm Queen Stakes and the Tancred stakes continue to be run together on the same card as part of the Sydney autumn carnival.
Fittingly, the most successful trainer of winners of the Storm Queen Stakes is Bart Cummings who has trained the winner on four occasions:
