Tasmanian Derby

     Tasmanian Derby (Listed)
                             2024 total prize money: $150,000
                    1st $90,000, 2nd $27,000, 3rd $13,500

The Tasmanian Derby has a long “on again, off again” history as it struggled for relevance in trying to live up to the reputation that is afforded to the three-year-old classic – The Derby.

The first running of the Tasmanian Derby took place at the Tasmanian Turf Club’s Mowbray racecourse in Launceston on Thursday February 20, 1873.
The TTC had been formed the previous year (1872) when ran it’s first-ever The Champion Cup as the main event of its inaugural summer racing carnival.
The Derby had been added to the club’s program the following year and unfortunately for the club, just two runners, Blue Peter and Leo, both mainland colts, faced the starter. Unfortunately, the 5/1 on favourite, Leo, broke down during the running of the race leaving Blue Peter, who had also injured himself, to canter to the post unopposed.

With their first Derby being such a disastrous event, the second wasn’t much better, with once again, just two runners, Kinglike and Ella facing the starter. Although both runners safely completed the course, the winner, Kinglike and runner-up Ella were both owned by Mr Phillip Dowling, so the Derby was a non-betting event, and not much of a spectacle either, with both horses simply keeping each other company as they completed the 1 ½ mile course.
After reviewing their summer program for 1875, the TTC decided to discontinue the Derby.

It would be fourteen years before Tasmanians saw another Derby.
In 1888 the Tasmanian Derby was given a second life when the Tasmanian Racing Club added a 1 ¼ mile Derby to their summer racing program.
Run at Elwick racecourse on Wednesday, November 21, 1888 the Derby was won by Mr C S Agnew’s bay colt Chaldean. The distance was set at once around the course which is approximately 1 ¼ miles. The following year the distance was increased to 1 ½ miles.

Unfortunately for the TRC, the Derby was still struggling to make its mark on the Tasmanian Turf.
Although the fields were somewhat larger than the earlier Derby, the interest in the race wasn’t what the club had hoped for, both with breeders and owners as well as the racing public.
After the 1895 Derby, the race was discontinued.

The following year, the Longford Racing Club, not wanting Tasmania to lose its Derby, added the race to their spring racing schedule. The 1 ½ mile “Longford Derby” had its first running on November 8 1896.
Unfortunately, the Longford Derby was plagued with the same issues as its predecessors and after just four Derbies the race was discontinued.

After a fifteen year hiatus, the Tasmanian Derby was given new life by the Tasmanian Turf Club. The TTC Derby (1 ¼ miles) had its first running at Mowbray Racecourse on December 27 1915 and was won by Mr C A H Youl's brown colt, Tasman's Isle.

The Tasmanian Derby continued to be run until 1934 though it still didn’t attain the prestige that is normally associated with a “Derby”. A lack of interest in the Derby due to small fields and owners not wanting to run early three-year-olds over 1 ½ miles saw Tasmania’s Derby once again, discontinued.
Attempts were made by the committee to revive the Derby but none ever came to fruition.

During the years of WWII the Derby was all but forgotten and it wasn’t until 1948 that the Tasmanian Derby made its reappearance at Mowbray racecourse.
After fourteen years of no Derby in Tasmania, the Tasmanian Turf Club reintroduced the Derby into its summer program. Set at a distance of 1 ¼ miles the TTC Tasmanian Derby had its first running at Mowbray racecourse on January 31 1948. The Derby was won by
Mr L W Logan’s Chestnut filly, Nifty Lass.
The Derby continued to be run at Launceston's Mowbray racecourse until 1960 when it was permanently moved to Elwick racecourse in Hobart.

The most successful trainer of winners of the Tasmanian Derby is William Clare who trained the winner on six occasions:
1888 Chaldean – 1889 Macquarie – 1893 Music – 1894 Silveroid
1897 Timbrel – 1898 Water Nymph

The most successful rider of Tasmanian Derby winners is George Stebbings with seven winners, which isn’t surprising given that he was stable rider for the powerful Clare stable:
1888 Chaldean – 1889 Macquarie – 1893 Music – 1894 Silveroid
1895 Tamino – 1897 Timbrel – 1898 Water Nymph

Two horses named Tasman’s Isle have won the Tasmanian Derby, the first in 1915 and the second in 1951.
Both winners were owned by the Youl family with Charles Youl owning the first winner in 1915 and his son Boyce Youl owning the 1951 winner. Both horses carried the Youl’s famous gold and white colours.

During the years of WWII the Derby remained all but forgotten and it wasn’t until 1948 that the Tasmanian Derby made its reappearance at Mowbray racecourse.
After fourteen years of no Derby in Tasmania, the Tasmanian Turf Club reinstated the Derby to its summer program.  Set at a distance of 1 ¼ miles the TTC Tasmanian Derby was run at Mowbray racecourse on January 31 1948

1934 to 1947 – No derby was run during this fourteen year period. A lack of interest in the Tasmanian Derby due to small fields and owners not wanting to run early three-year-olds over 1 ½ miles saw the Tasmanian Turf Club discontinue the race. Attempts were made by the committee to revive the Derby but none ever came to fruition
