Australian Guineas
The Australian Guineas is one of the more recent
additions to Group 1 racing in Australia.
The three-year-old set weight race was first run in February
1986 as a group 3 event over 1600m but was upgraded to Group 1 status the
following year.
The inaugural running was won by the Angus Armanasco
trained, True Version and ridden by Darren Gauci.
In 2021, Lunar Fox created Australian racing history when he won the Australian Guineas at the incredible odds of 300/1. Lunar Fox’s starting price made him the longest priced winner ever of an Australian Group 1. The previous record was held by Abaridy who won the 1986 Caulfield Guineas at odds of 250/1.
The most successful trainer of winners of the Australian
Guineas is shared by Lee Freedman and Mick Price with three wins each.
