Manikato Stakes
(Freeway Stakes)
The Manikato Stakes was originally named the Freeway Stakes and was first run at Moonee Valley racecourse on Saturday, August 31 1968. It was won by the great WFA champion of the era, Winfreux, who ran the public elect at even money.
Winfreux was the first great galloper to win the Freeway Stakes, though many others followed his lead, including Vain, Dual Choice, Century, Tauto, Scamanda and of course the great Manikato who won two Freeway Stakes – 1979 & 1982.
In 1984 the MVRC renamed the Freeway Stakes, the Manikato Stakes, in honour of the great sprinter, Manikato who excelled at the Moonee Valley track. Manikato recorded 7 wins and 1 third placing from 8 starts at the Valley, including 5 consecutive William Reid Stakes.
The Moonee Valley track was redeveloped to a StrathAyr surface in 1995 which meant that all time records had to be reset from 1995 onwards.
Six horses have won the Freeway/Manikato Stakes on more than one occasion:
Dual Choice 1970/71 – Tauto 1973/74 – Manikato 1979 & 82 – Spinning Hill 2002/03 Spark Of Life 2004/05 & Hey Doc 2017 & 2020
Riding honours belong to Frank Reys who piloted the winner on 4 occasions:
Dual Choice 1970 & 1971 and Tauto 1973 & 1974.
Training honours are shared by Bart Cummings and Bob Hoysted who both trained 4 winners each.
