 The Invitation Stakes was first run at Caulfield racecourse during the spring carnival of 1951.
The MRC secretary Mr. J. C. Reilly thought it would be a good promotion for the club to host a one-off invitational race that would see the best riders from all the states and territories of Australia riding on the same race-card.

The annual Melbourne show-day holiday in late September was considered the ideal time to stage such an event, with the hope that many Melbournians would spend their day-off at the races.
Twenty three horses were nominated for the inaugural 7 furlong event which had been limited to a maximum field of 16 runners. Of the 23 nominations only fourteen accepted, leaving Tasmanian rider E. Cox and Northern Territory rider R. Gorden without a ride in the race.
The scratchings on race day of Heroic Lad and Tania left Frank Tocknell (TAS) and Frank ‘Tiger’ Moore (WA) without rides, leaving twelve runners to face the starter.

The race was a triumph for Western Australia, with both the winner, Jovial Lad and his rider E. Treffone hailing from the western state.
The race was also a triumph for Mr. J. C. Reilly and the MRC, with a public-holiday crowd of just over 50,000 turning up at Caulfield to see the best riders in the country.
Such was the success of the Invitation Stakes, the MRC decided to keep it as an annual event.

The Race remained in its original format until 1975 when a sponsorship deal with tobacco company Philip Morris saw the name changed to the ‘Marlboro Cup’.
The race seemed to suffer an identity crisis, with the name changing again in 1989 to the ‘Show Day Cup’ then in 1992 it became the ‘Vic-Health Cup’.

The abandonment of the Melbourne Show Day public holiday in 1994 saw the long-standing Thursday race meeting, which also featured the Underwood Stakes, transferred to a Saturday meeting.

From 2000 – 2001 the Vic-Health Cup became the ‘Eat Well Live Well Cup’ before changing again in 2002 to the Dubai Racing Club Cup’. In 2006 the race was changed to the ‘Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes’ in honour of former MRC Chairman Sir Rupert Clarke, who died the previous year.
Five gallopers have won the Invitation Stakes on more than one occasion:
St Joel 1953, 56 & 59 – Anonyme 1961/62 – Tauto 1970/71
Private Talk 1976 & 79 – Testa Rossa 1999/2000
At ten years of age, St Joel’s performance in 1959 to win the Invitation Stakes for a third time is the highlight of the race’s history. St. Joel had previously won the Invitation Stakes in 1953 as a four year old and in 1956 as a seven year old.

Training honours rest with Lee Freedman who saddled up the winner on four occasions:

2001 Mr Murphy
The most successful rider of winners of the Invitation Stakes is Damien Oliver who has piloted the winner on six occasions:
1990 Submariner – 1992 Mannerism – 1994 Poetic King – 1999 Testa Rossa
2001 Mr Murphy – 2008 Orange County.
