The Expressway Stakes is a 1200 metre Group 2 Weight-For-Age + penalties race that is run at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales in early February.
2025 total prize money: $300,000
1st $170,000, 2nd $56,000, 3rd $27,250
The first running of the Expressway Stakes took place at Randwick racecourse on February 16, 1974.
The race was run under WFA conditions over a distance of 1100 metres and was won by Mr D E Robinson’s popular sprinter, I’m Scarlet.
Throughout its relatively short history, the Expressway Stakes has been shuffled around from one racecourse to another, with every one of Sydney’s metropolitan racetracks having played host to the race.
Only one horse has won the Expressway Stakes on more than one occasion and that was Court’s In Session in 2005/06.
Some great gallopers have won the Expressway Stakes over the years, greats like, Luskin Star, Kingston Town, Sir Dapper, Saintly, Tie The Knot and Lonhro.
The most successful trainer of winners of the Expressway Stakes is Guy Walter who saddled-up the winner on four occasions:
