Premiere Stakes (Gr2)
The Premiere Stakes is a 1200 metre Group 2 Weight-For-Age race that is
run at Randwick racecourse in New South Wales on Epsom Handicap day, during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
2025 total prize money: $1,000,000
1st $580,000, 2nd $190,000, 3rd $96,000
[Race Record: 1:07.45 – Santa Ana Lane 2018]
The first running of the Premiere Stakes took place at Rosehill Racecourse on August 5th 1972 over a distance of 1300m. The race was won the Jack Denham trained and Stan and Millie Fox owned three-year-old colt, Outback.
The distance was shortened to 1200m in 1976.
The Premiere Stakes was run at both Rosehill and Canterbury Racecourses throughout the 70s & 80s before being permanently transferred to Rosehill in 1994.
A further change to the venue occurred in 2011 when the Premiere Stakes was added to Randwick's Epsom Handicap/Metropolitan Handicap race day program.
Two horses have won the Premiere Stakes on more than one occasion:
Joanne in 1991/92 and Mr Innocent in 1999 & 2000.
The most successful trainer of winners of the Premier Stakes is Jack Denham who saddled-up the winner on seven occasions:
