Hobartville Stakes (Gr2)

The Hobartville Stakes is a 1400 metre Group 2 Set Weights race for three-year-olds (colts & geldings 56.5 fillies 54.5) that is run at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales, in late February.

2026 total prize money: $400,000

1st $227,000, 2nd $74,500, 3rd $36,500

The first running of the Hobartville Stakes (7 furlongs) took place at Warwick Farm Racecourse on Saturday, August 29, 1925 and was won by Mr Abe Wade’s talented gelding, Amounis.

Amounis would go on to become one of the great gallopers of his era, an era that included the likes of Phar Lap, Nightmarch, Mollison, Fuji San, Windbag, Highland, Limerick & Gothic to name a few.

During the years of WWII (1940 – 1945) the Warwick Farm racecourse was transformed into a military camp for Australian and allied troops. After the War, the racecourse and its infrastructure was left in such a state of damage and disrepair that racing did not recommence there until 1952.

In 2006 The Hobartville Stakes was permanently transferred to Rosehill.

Many gallopers that have won the Hobartville Stakes have gone on to achieve greatness in their later careers.

These include: Amounis, Mollison, High Caste, Flight, Shannon, Hydrogen, Kingster, Todman, Wenona Girl, Baguette, Lonhro and Anamoe.

The distance of the Hobartville Stakes has remained the same (7f/1400m) since its inaugural running in 1925.

The most successful trainer of winners of the Hobartville Stakes is the great

T. J. Smith, who saddled-up the winner on seven occasions:

Unlike other racecourses that were occupied by the military during the war years, Warwick Farm did not reopen when the war ended. The damage done to Warwick Farm during its occupation was so extensive that delays to its reopening dragged on for years.

Also, inadequacies of Totalisators, catering, grandstands and sewerage systems meant that building and upgrade work delayed the reopening even further. Warwick Farm meetings continued to be held at Randwick until the course finally reopened to the public in 1952.
