Blue Diamond Stakes (GR1)

Before the inception of the Blue Diamond Stakes, the premier two year old race in Melbourne was the VRC Ascot Vale Stakes. In 1966, after more than 100 years of history, the VRC removed the Ascot Vale Stakes from its spring program and did not reinstate it until 1969, when it was re-programmed as a three year old event.
This meant that Melbourne
was without a premier two year old, six furlong event to compete with Sydney’s popular
Golden Slipper Stakes.
In February 1971 the VATC
introduced the Blue Diamond Stakes and the new race quickly gained popularity
with Sydney and Melbourne owners eager to pit their autumn two year olds
against each other.
Trainers also got a good
indication from the Blue Diamond as to whether consideration should be given to
a Sydney campaign targeting the STC Golden Slipper Stakes.
Only four Blue Diamond
winners have gone on to complete the Blue Diamond/ Golden Slipper double.

The most successful
trainer of Blue Diamond winners is David Hayes who has saddled up the winner on

The Blue Diamond has been a real family affair for the Hayes family with David’s father Colin, saddling-up the winner on three occasions:
