The Caulfield Cup was first run at Caulfield racecourse on Saturday April 5 1879 and was won by Mr. A. Chirnside’s Newminster.

A mile and a half GR1 handicap (2400m) the Caulfield Cup has always been an important part of the Melbourne spring carnival and a major lead-up race to the Melbourne Cup which is run 2 ½ weeks later at Flemington racecourse.
Controversy surrounded the 1893 Caulfield Cup both immediately after the running of the race and in the days that followed.
The race was won by the 25/1 outsider, Tim Swiveller, who beat Sainfoin by ½ length with Oxide a neck away third.

A protest against the winner by the riders of both Sainfoin and Oxide for severe interference over the final half furlong was dismissed by the VATC stewards and correct weight posted.
Normally, the steward’s rulings on a protest is final and connections and punters have to accept their decision regardless of their own personal opinions.
Not so in the case of the 1893 Caulfield Cup.

The connections of Sainfoin and Oxide appealed the race-day protest ruling to the VRC, which resulted in a second protest hearing on the Wednesday following the Caulfield Cup.
The appeal was heard by the VRC committee with several witnesses expressing their views that Tim Swiveller had indeed cost Sainfoin the prize.

The VRC committee ruled that the VATC stewards had erred in their dismissal of the original protest and upheld the appeal by the connections of Sainfoin and Oxide.
Further, the VRC stewards disqualified the original winner Tim Swiveller.

This decision caused pandemonium amongst bookmakers and punters alike, with bookies having already paid out on Tim Swiveller now having to pay out on Sainfoin.

Punters who’d already been paid out on Tim Swiveller were laughing, whereas those who’d backed Sainfoin and discarded their tickets were left hopelessly out of pocket.

Racing ceased at Caulfield during WWII when the racecourse was turned into an army base.
From April 1940 until August 1944 all Caulfield races were transferred to Flemington where the 1940 to 1943 Caulfield Cups were run.
In 1881 the VATC decided to run two Caulfield Cups, one in the autumn and one in the spring but this turned out to be a one-off, though it wasn’t the only time we saw two Caulfield Cup winners in one year.

In 1943 there was also two Caulfield Cup winners. The weight of numbers for the race saw the race split into two divisions with Saint Warden winning the first division and Skipton the second.

Like the Melbourne Cup, the Caulfield Cup is now being targeted by top class international gallopers. With more than $6M in prize-money on offer, its little wonder we’re seeing the overseas raiders making the trip down-under.

The most recent raider being the Japanese galloper, Mer De Glace who won the 2019 Caulfield Cup.
Seven horses have won the Caulfield Cup on more than one occasion:
Paris 1892 & 94 – Hymettus 1898 & 1901 – Poseidon 1906/07
Uncle Sam – 1912 & 14 – Whittier 1922 & 25 – Rising Fast 1954/55
Ming Dynasty 1977 & 80

Training honours for the Caulfield belong to Bart Cummings who saddled up the winner on seven occasions:

1893 - The 25/1 outsider Tim Swiveller was first past the post by a half-length to Sainfoin with Oxide a neck away third. A protest against the winner by the riders of both Sainfoin and Oxide alleging severe interference over the final half furlong was dismissed by the VATC stewards and correct-weight was posted. 
However, an appeal to the VRC by the connections of Sainfoin and Oxide resulted in a second protest hearing on the Wednesday following the Caulfield Cup. The appeal was heard by the VRC committee with several witnesses expressing their views that Tim Swiveller had indeed cost Sainfoin the prize.
The VRC committee upheld the appeal and in doing so disqualified the original winner, Tim Swiveller.
