       W. S. Cox Plate (GR1)

The W.S. Cox Plate was named after the founder of the Moonee Valley racecourse Mr Sam Cox and was first run during the spring of 1922.

At a distance of 9 ½ furlongs and with a purse of £1000, the new WFA event was cleverly positioned on the Saturday after Caulfield’s premier race day, Caulfield Cup day, and the Saturday before the start of the Flemington Carnival which features the Derby, Melbourne Cup and Oaks.

Since its inception, the W. S. Cox Plate has confirmed its status and cemented its position as the WFA championship of Australasia with its winners reading like a roll-call of Australasia’s best WFA gallopers of every era.

Peruse through the list of winners and it soon becomes evident that the best of every decade are all present and accounted for. From Phar Lap, Chatham and Ajax in the 30s, Beau Vite, Tranquil Star and Flight in the 40s, Hydrogen and Rising Fast in the 50s, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze and Daryl’s Joy in the 60s, Kingston Town’s trio of wins in the early 80s, right through to Sunline, Northerly and Makybe Diva in the first decade of the 21^st century.

In 2017, Champion mare, Winx became only the second horse in history to win three consecutive Cox Plates, equalling the feat achieved by the great Kingston Town in the early 1980s.

In 2018, Winx surpassed Kingston Town when she won her fourth consecutive W. S. Cox Plate and in the process extended her winning sequence to 29 consecutive wins.

There have been a few changes to the distance of the race since its inaugural running in 1922.

From 1922 through to 1942, the Cox Plate was contested at 9 ½ furlongs.

In 1943 the distance was increased to 10 furlongs and it remained at that trip until 1972 when Australia’s adoption of the metric system of measurement saw 10 furlongs become 2000m.

After just two years at 2000m the Cox Plate changed again in 1974 when it was increased to 2050m. The race distance remained at 2050m from 1974 until 1985 when it was changed to the current race distance of 2040m.

Apart from distance changes, the entire Moonee Valley circuit was redeveloped to a StrathAyr track in 1995. 

Fourteen horses have won the W. S. Cox Plate on more than one occasion including the previously mentioned champions, Kingston Town and Winx.

Other dual winners are: Phar Lap, Chatham, Young Idea, Beau Vite, Tranquil Star, Flight, Hydrogen, Tobin Bronze, Sunline, Northerly, Fields Of Omagh & So You Think

Training honours for the W. S. Cox Plate belong to T. J. Smith who prepared the winner on seven occasions:

The most successful rider of winners of the W. S. Cox Plate is “Demon” Darby Munro who piloted the winner home on five occasions:
