The Lightning Stakes is a 1000m WFA Gr1 sprint that is run at Flemington in early to mid-February. It is the first Group 1 event of the Melbourne autumn racing carnival and forms the first leg of the carnival’s ‘Sprint Triple Crown’ , the other two legs being the 1100m Gr1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield and the 1200m Gr1 Newmarket at Flemington.

Only two gallopers have
completed the Triple Crown – the great West Australian sprinter, Placid Ark in
1987 and the ‘Grey Flash’ Schillaci in 1992.
The Lightning was first
run in 1955 when the odds-on favourite Gay Vista strolled in, much to the
punters delight. Since then, the race has been a roll-call of Australia’s
greatest sprinting champions – Todman, Sky High, Wenona Girl, Century, Dual
Choice, Maybe Mahal, Schillaci, Takeover Target and the greatest of them all,
the undefeated, Black Caviar, the only horse to win the Lightning three times.

Cummings with a total haul of seven winners:

the top rider of the Lightning, having won the race on five occasions – 1992/93 Schillaci, 1996 Gold Ace, 2000 Testa Rossa

The shortest priced
favourite to be beaten in the Lightning is shared by two horses, Dubbo in 1958
and Star Of Heaven in 1965, both were 4/1ON and both were beaten a short half
head. OUCH!!!
Before the 2013 running of
the Lightning Stakes, the VRC renamed the event in honour of the great mare,
Black Caviar, it is now known as The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. As if to
show her appreciation, Black Caviar came out and broke the course record for
the 1000m event that was named in her honour.
