The Melbourne Cup has a reputation as being one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

Here in Australia, the Melbourne Cup has gone beyond being a mere horse race, it is an institution, an annual event that stops a nation. Whether you follow racing or not, is irrelevant, everyone stops to watch or listen, because everyone wants to celebrate and be a part of – The Melbourne Cup.

The Melbourne Cup was first run at Flemington racecourse on Thursday November 7 1861, it was run over a distance of two miles and offered a purse of £730. A crowd of about 4000 attended the meeting and watched a galloper named Archer win the inaugural running of the race.
Archer repeated his effort the following year.

The race day was changed from the usual Thursday meeting to a Tuesday in 1875, but it wasn’t until the following year that the time-honoured date of the ‘First Tuesday in November’ became official.

Victorians took to their new race with great enthusiasm and such was its popularity that by 1871, just ten years from its first running, the crowd of 4000 had now become 40,000.
In 1877, a public holiday was granted so that all Victorians could enjoy celebrating this great race together, and celebrate they did, with more than 75,000 on course that day to see the three year old Chester, nose-out the favourite, Savanaka and set a new race record of 3:33 ½.

Five horses have won the Melbourne Cup on more than one occasion, Archer in 1861/62, Peter Pan in 1932 & 34, Rain Lover in 1968/69 and Think Big in 1974/75. The great mare Makybe Diva went one better in 2005 when she made it three consecutive wins, thus becoming one of the most celebrated horses in Australian racing history.

The most successful trainer of winners of the Melbourne Cup is the one and only Bart Cummings, who made the race his own, having trained the winner on no less than twelve occasions:
1965 Light Fingers – 1966 Galilee – 1967 Red Handed – 1974/75 Think Big
1977 Gold And Black – 1979 Hyperno – 1990 Kingston Rule
1991 Let’s Elope – 1996 Saintly – 1999 Rogan Josh – 2008 Viewed

Riding honours are shared between two jockeys, Bobby Lewis and Harry White both having won the big Flemington two-miler on four occasions:

R. Lewis: 1902 The Victory – 1915 Patrobas – 1919 Artilleryman
1927 Trivalve

H. White: 1974 Think Big – 1975 Think Big – 1978 Arwon – 1979 Hyperno

Special mention has to be made of Lloyd Williams, who, as an owner, has won the Melbourne Cup on seven occasions.
Williams’ winners are: 1981 Just A Dash – 1985 What A Nuisance

Racing history tell us that Archer was  owned by Ettienne De Mestre and trained by him at his Terara property, but neither part of this is correct. Archer raced in E. De Mestre's name thoughout his career but he was actually owned by his breeder, Messrs. T. Roberts & R. Hassall, and it was De Mestre’s head trainer, Tom Lamond who trained Archer for both his Melbourne Cup wins.  Lamond trained Archer at his father's property which was some distance away from De Mestre's Terara stables. Tom Lamond was an exceptional horseman, who, after his early association with De Mestre became a leading trainer in his own right.
Lamond also trained the 1881 Melbourne Cup winner, Zulu, as well as the winners of many other major races throughout the early days of the Australian turf.
